How does the IELTS listening diagnostic work?
You listen once and answer questions in recording order. Instead of returning only a total, ListenSlice maps each answer to a listening process such as speech decoding, exact-detail recognition, paraphrase mapping, distractor control, retention, or question tracking, then opens a targeted practice prescription. The current short baseline gives a direction, not an official IELTS band score.
Is my audio private? Does anything get uploaded?
Nothing is uploaded by default. Transcription (Whisper, via WebGPU) runs entirely in your browser, so your audio never leaves your device — that's what makes it safe to practice with materials you own. The only exception is optional cross-device sync of your progress and notebook (never the audio itself), and an opt-in Pro audio backup you turn on yourself.
Do I have to wait for audio to process?
The 769 free library episodes open instantly — they come pre-sliced, so you start practicing with zero wait. When you upload your own file, Whisper transcribes it in your browser first; a 10-minute file typically takes a minute or two, one time, then it's saved for instant resume.
What's free, and what's Pro?
Free covers the whole 769-episode library (unlimited), 3 of your own uploads a month up to 15 minutes each, dictation scoring, sentence playback, and a few daily AI-tutor questions. Can I ask about sentences I don't understand?
Yes. Every sentence has a built-in AI tutor, right in the practice canvas — ask why you couldn't catch a phrase, how the grammar works, or what an expression means, and get a compact, listening-focused answer in your own language. It's a multi-turn chat, so you can keep following up. Free accounts get a few questions a day; Pro unlocks the full daily allowance.
What audio can I practice with?
Your own MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, or OGG files — practice tests, podcasts, lectures, audiobooks — plus a free library of 769 graded episodes: slow VOA news, natural-speed audiobooks and full-cast drama, NASA conversations, and human-narrated Wikipedia articles, sorted by CEFR level (A2–C1).
How accurate is the transcription across accents?
ListenSlice uses Whisper large-v3, which handles US, UK, Australian and other English accents well. Library episodes are transcribed and sentence-aligned ahead of time for clean playback boundaries; and since you're checking your own typing against the reference, you're learning from the audio itself, not depending on a perfect transcript.
